True Standings & Strength of Schedule

Several years ago, the Jeffco Youth Football County Board approved the use of weighted schedules and strength of schedule rankings to better reflect team performance across all divisions.

Our website provider’s standard standings pages display only basic win/loss records. While these are still visible, they do not support the more advanced calculations required for strength of schedule. For that reason, Jeffco Youth Football utilizes what we call “True Standings.”

What Are True Standings?

True Standings are a ranking system designed to provide a more accurate evaluation of team performance.

  • Each team’s record is evaluated based on the pre-season ranking of their opponents
  • This ensures that wins and losses are weighed according to the strength of competition
  • Pre-season rankings remain fixed throughout the season and are used as the baseline for all calculations
  • The result is a fair and consistent ranking system across all teams within a division

How It Impacts Playoffs

  • All playoff seeding and placement will be determined by True Standings, not the standard win/loss standings shown on the website.

🏈 True Standings Example: Why Strength of Schedule Matters

🔵 Team A (4–2)

  • ✅ Beat #1
  • ✅ Beat #3
  • ✅ Beat #5
  • ✅ Beat #8
  • ❌ Lost to #2
  • ❌ Lost to #4

Played Top Competition

⚪ Team B (4–2)

  • ✅ Beat #7
  • ✅ Beat #9
  • ✅ Beat #10
  • ✅ Beat #12
  • ❌ Lost to #1
  • ❌ Lost to #2

Played Lower-Ranked Teams

🏆 Team A Ranks Higher

Even though both teams are 4–2, Team A is ranked higher because they:

  • ✔️ Faced stronger opponents
  • ✔️ Earned wins against top-ranked teams

💡 What This Means

  • Not all wins are equal
  • Beating stronger teams carries more value
  • True Standings reward performance against quality competition
